Lemuel Bradley was born in February 1750 in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut, the son of Joseph Bradley. In 1766, Lemuel moved to Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont with his father. They later settled in Sunderland, Bennington County, Vermont. In 1775, Lemuel moved to Burlington, Vermont to settle on a tract of land that he purchased on the Winooski River. He represented Burlington at the convention at Dorset in 1776. Soon after the breaking out of the Revolutionary War, a band of Indians burnt his house, destroyed his furniture and smashed his china - homeless, he returned to Sunderland. He married Mercy Washburn in January 1782 at Lenox, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Lemuel and Mercy had six children: Harriet, Olive, Maria, Harry, Lemuel and John M. Captain Lemuel Bradley commanded the Sunderland Company of the 6th Regiment of Vermont Militia in 1781 and 1782. Lemuel resided in Sunderland, Bennington County, Vermont until his death on December 11, 1800. He is buried in the Ira Allen Cemetery at Sunderland.
