Daniel Welch was born in 1749. In 1768, he moved from Norwich, New London County, Connecticut to Pawlet, Bennington County (now Rutland County), Vermont where he was one of the town's earliest settlers. On July 21, 1777, Daniel enlisted in Captain John Warner's Company of Green Mountain Rangers, and served until August 20, 1777, four days after the Battle of Bennington, when he was mustered out. In 1780 and 1782, he served in Pawlet Companies of the 6th Vermont Militia Regiment. On April 1, 1780 and October 10, 1780, he served in Captain John Stark's Company for 4 and 1 day respectively, first in responding to an alarm at Skenesborough, Charlotte County (now Whitehall, Washington County), New York and then in the defence of the Northern Frontier of Vermont during the alarm caused by the British Raid lead by Major Christopher Carleton upon Fort Ann in Charlotte County (now Washington County), New York and Fort George at the southern end of Lake George (now in Warren County), New York. In 1782, he served in Captain Zodock Everest's Company for a day in an alarm about the 1st of May. In September 1785, he was one of the incorporators of the Congregational Religious Society in Pawlet. Daniel married four times: first to Polly Bryant; next to Catharine Risden in 1788; next to Return Strong's widow in 1813; and next to Widow Kent of Dorset, Bennington County, Vermont. He had numerous children of which were Daniel, Almer, Andrew, Derua and Polly. In 1822, Daniel moved to Mendon, Monroe County, New York. He resided in Mendon until his death, which occurred at Ontario, Monroe County, New York in August, 1827.
