Company History About Our Standard Company Roster 1777



Elon Lee was born in 1763 at East Guilford (now Madison), New Haven County, Connecticut. He was the second of seven children (2nd son) born of Azariah Lee (1740-1821) and his wife Eunice Couch (1742-1811). His siblings were: Stephen, Adra, Azariah, Solomon, Mabel and Eben Lee (1783-1866).

During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Elon resided in Sunderland, Bennington County, Vermont. On August 29, 1777, Elon, at the age of 14 years, enlisted as a Drummer in Captain John Warner's Company, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Herrick's Vermont Regiment of Rangers. While in this service, Captain Warner's Company was stationed at Pawlet, Bennington County, Vermont. Elon went from there with a detachment that marched to Mount Independence and Mount Defiance near Fort Ticonderoga. Elon was mustered out of Captain Warner's Company, December 3, 1777.

In the spring of 1778, Elon enlisted for nine months in Captain William Hutchin's Company of Vermont Troops. Captain Hutchin's Company was headquartered at Fort Ranger in Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont where they were joined to the Independent Corps of Rangers under the command of Major Benjamin Whitcomb. At Fort Ranger, Major Whitcomb appointed Elon, Drum Major, a rank receiving the same pay as Sergeant Major. During this period of service, Elon accompanied Lieutenant Isaac Clark on a Flag of Truce to Lake Champlain and boarded the H.M.S. Maria where they saw the Commander of the British Land Forces, General Carleton, and the commander of the vessel, Captain Steel. After serving out the full nine months of this enlistment, Elon was discharged at Rutland.

From August 1st to November 17th, 1779, Elon served as Drummer in Captain Parmelee Allen's Company of Rangers headquartered at Fort Warren, in Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont. In October 1780, Elon returned to Fort Warren where he served 23 days as a Drummer in Captain Daniel Comstock's (Sunderland) Company, Colonel Ira Allen's 6th Regiment of Vermont Militia during the alarm caused by the raid led by British Major Christopher Carleton into the Lake Champlain Valley and beyond.

On August 18, 1781, Elon enlisted as a Drummer in Captain George Sexton's Company, Colonel Ebenezer Walbridge's Vermont Regiment. Captain Sexton's Company marched to Skenesborough (now Whitehall), Charlotte (now Washington) County, New York. At Skenesborough, Colonel Walbridge appointed Elon, Drum Major. Elon was discharged from this service, November 20, 1781. Less than one month later, beginning on December 16, 1781, Elon served 4 days as a Drummer in Captain Eli Brownson's (Sunderland) Company, Colonel Ira Allens' 6th Vermont Militia Regiment in an alarm to the westward.

In May 1782, Elon served with a guard that took some prisoners to Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont and on a separate occasion he served 5 days in Captain Eli Brownson's (Sunderland) Company, in the re-taking of Lieutenant William Blanchard of Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont from the Tories. In the fall 1782, Elon was engaged as a Drummer in Captain Lemuel Bradley's (Sunderland) Company that went to Fort Edward, Charlotte (now Washington) County, New York in response to an alarm that Sir John Johnson with his Indian Allies were making an incursion into the State of New York.

Elon married, March 11, 1784 in Sunderland, Bennington County, Vermont, Margaret (Peggy) Bentley (1764-1848). They moved to Jericho, Chittenden County, Vermont, 1786. Elon resided in Jericho until his death on June 17, 1844. Elon is buried next to his wife Margaret in the Pleasant View (Jericho Village) Cemetery, Jericho, Chittenden County, Vermont.
