Company History About Our Standard Company Roster 1777



Issachar Norton was born August 15, 1757 in Suffield, Litchfield (now Hartford) County, Connecticut, the son of Shadrack and Mercy (Smith) Norton.

By July 1777, Issachar resided in Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont. On July 21, 1777, he enlisted as a Private in Captain John Warner's Company of Green Mountain Rangers, and served until December 3, 1777, when he was mustered out. In 1780, 1781 and 1782, he served in Bennington Companies of the 2nd Vermont Militia Regiment. On October 11, 1780, he served for 6 days in Captain Samuel Robinson's Company responding to the alarm caused by the British Raid lead by Major Christopher Carleton upon Fort Ann in Charlotte (now Washington) County, New York and Fort George at the southern end of Lake George (now in Warren County), New York. On August 2, 1781 and September 7, 1782, he served in Captain Joseph Safford's Company for 3 and 5 days respectively.

He married Lorana Paine. By 1790, they had moved to New Haven, Addison County, Vermont. Issachar and Lorana had 10 children: Seth, Shadrach, Issachar, Samuel, Eldad, Olive, Laura, Roswell who was drowned in Vermont, Roswell 2nd, and Elon.

In 1805, Issachar moved to Barnston, Stanstead County, Province of Quebec, Canada. He died in 1825.
