Josiah Welch resided in Skenesborough, Charlotte County (now Whitehall, Washington County) New York as early as 1773. He remained a resident there until the later part of the Revolutionary War. On August 29, 1777 he enlisted in Captain John Warner's Company of Green Mountain Rangers, where he served until he was mustered out December 3, 1777. By 1781, Josiah had moved to Westfield (now Fort Ann), Washington County, New York. On January 22, 1781, Josiah was elected one of Westfield’s “commitioners of rodes”. In Fort Ann between the Putnam Mountain range and the Fort Ann Range lies a valley known as Welch Hollow. This valley is named in honor of Josiah Welch, who was one of its earliest settlers. Josiah had at least 3 children: Jane, Josiah and John. Josiah later moved to Ontario, Wayne County, New York. Stephen resided in Ontario until his death on June 12, 1835.
